Hagi Yaki is a type of Japanese pottery from around the city of Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture. It was first started by Korean potters brought to Japan during the Japanese invasion of Korea, but has since then become a well respected and appreciated type of pottery in Japan. It is said that the ranking of the preferred pottery styles for teaware in Japan are Raku first, Hagi second, and Karatsu third.
Hagi Yaki is often made with a rough clay than most ceramics, which is part of how it comes to embody the spirit of the term Wabi Sabi. Wabi Sabi is an affection for the imperfection in an object. Hagi Yaki has started to develop some unique styles first of which is Oni Hagi or a very rough and sandy clay. Another less often seen style is Hime Hagi a style of Hagi Yaki made with very refined clay.
