Overview

Known in the Western world as "black tea," and in the East as "red tea" (红茶 - hóng chá), this style of tea is fully oxidized.

Eastern and Western Terms

In the East, the term "black tea" is used to describe a category of post-fermented, often compressed teas such as puerh, liu an, liu bao, and others. Teas that would be called "black tea" in the West are usually known in the East as "red teas." In the West, "red tea" exclusively denotes the herbal tea Rooibos.
